Project Description

Illinois River Celebration – Hathkapasuta

This summer event was started as part of original community revitalization of Illinois River Forks State Park and ran annually from 1998 – 2003. Bringing together conservation organizations, natural resource agencies, live music, local arts and crafts, along with Native American storytelling, the celebration focused on the community’s connection to the Illinois River. Hathkapasuta is a regional Indian word meaning “a family gathering by the river. The River Celebration was revived in 2013 and continues as a signature community event.
