Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up inside homes without warning. It is produced by fuel-burning appliances such as gas or propane heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, generators, and wood stoves — which are especially common in our region.
During the winter months, homes are often closed up to retain heat and heating systems are used more frequently. This combination can increase carbon monoxide risk, especially when ventilation is limited.
Wood stoves are an important and cost-effective heat source for many households, but they require proper ventilation and regular maintenance. Blocked chimneys, poor airflow, damaged flues, or tightly sealed homes can allow carbon monoxide to accumulate indoors.
Why Seasonal Awareness Matters
Carbon monoxide risks increase during fall and winter. Common seasonal situations that can raise CO risk include:
- Using wood stoves or fireplaces for extended periods
- Starting heaters that have not been used in months
- Closing homes tightly to retain heat
- Using generators, propane heaters, or grills near doors, windows, or indoors
Because carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled, symptoms are often mistaken for common winter illness. Early signs may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and confusion.
